and Local Services for Moab : The spectacular natural beauty of Moab’s Canyon Country is unparalleled, a perfect place for any outdoor enthusiasts to get married. In fact, many mountain bikers, jeepers, and other nature lovers travel from all over the world to visit this beautiful place. Some even get married here! Moab is not for everyone, for sure. Some things to keep in mind are its location, size, and resources. The town is located a few hours from any major airport, and about 30 miles south of the Interstate. Some couples find the remote location very private and appealing, while others would do better to stick with a more accessible venue. In addition, there are only about 5000 residents here, a sizeable portion of which leave town during the winter because it is the off-season. Because Moab’s main source of revenue is tourism, when the tourist flow slows to a trickle, many residents take off for their own vacations or to a second home. As for resources, there are plenty of options when it comes to lodging and finding an outdoor wedding venue. However, other wedding needs may be more difficult to find, depending on your personal taste and size of your wedding party. There are several restaurants, but very few that can accommodate a large party all year round. Therefore, reception venues can be difficult to find; again, this depends on the size of your wedding party and your menu needs. Finally, at the time of this writing, there are no bridal shops or party stores (for those last-minute alterations or chachki needs). Bakers and florists are particularly hard to come by, although they are there. Be forewarned, your wedding provider choices will be few and far between. I spoke once with a wedding coordinator who spent a few years organizing weddings in Moab. She told me that while there is no more beautiful place in the world, the logistics can be somewhat of a challenge and that the town is best suited for small (fewer than 50 guests), outdoor weddings and either casual receptions or elaborate receptions held at one of the river resorts. Flexibility and patience are a must. The most difficult part about planning weddings here is actually the business owners’ lack of ability or willingness to communicate via email. Even phone calls are not readily returned by many wedding service providers in this area. However, they are usually willing to set up an appointment to meet with couples in person. My wedding coordinator friend highly recommends this approach. So, if you have the flexibility to travel to this remote area once or twice before your wedding, go for it. If you don’t have the time or patience to deal with the quirks of the locals, then there are many other responsive, reliable venues out there. So, if you still have your hearts set on a wedding in Canyon Country, consider getting married during the spring or fall. While winters are very mild here, many businesses close down during the off-season months. And summers can be scorching, with temperatures easily over 100 degrees. Spring and fall generally are the most inviting times of year. The towering red rocks, endless canyons, and enticing La Sal mountains to the east all make for a spectacular backdrop for your wedding day. Take some extra time before and after your wedding to enjoy all the area has to offer. Hike, bike, or just drive through Arches and Canyonlands National parks. Sign up for an adventure tour with one of the many adventure companies in town. Rugged outdoor enthusiasts will also appreciate the rare calm and beauty of a clear, starry night spent camping in this desert area. Not into the outdoor adventures? Book a day at one of the area spas, tour a winery, or take in a relaxing game of golf. However you spend your time here, a wedding in Moab is unlike any other place on earth! |
