In Defense of the "Family Only" wedding:

I have heard it time and time again in my old "banquet and catering" days. It's the tired, worn out bride and groom who declare that their wedding has gotten out of control. It's "too big" and "too expensive" and they feel like they have lost control.

One solution to this is to have a "family only" wedding. By doing this, you will most certainly save money, time, and your sanity! These are becoming more common, as the cost of travel has gone up and most people simply don't have the time to take a week off of work to attend a wedding.

Cody Wyoming - Western Heritage, Western Weddings!

A little bit about Cody and area:

Cody Wyoming is a wonderfully interesting little town in the northern half of Wyoming, just about an hour to the east of Yellowstone National Park. It is definitely "small town USA" with a population of around 10,000 people. However, if you truly want a Western Experience for your wedding, there might be no better place to have your ceremony.

A little bit about Cody first, though. The Shoshone River carves a deep canyon that runs through the town of Cody. The Shoshone's headwaters are in Yellowstone National Park. Cody is situated at about 5016 feet above sea level. Not too high, but still, people coming in from lower elevations may need a day to adapt to the slightly thinner air. The weather in Cody can vary greatly with large temperature swings in a relatively short period of time. If you are planning a wedding in Cody, you'll need to make sure that you have clothes to handle these variances, should they occur. The winters are quite cold, but the summers can have temperatures that soar over 100 degrees! It's usually pretty dry here, so the heat doesn't seem quite as bad! Cody does get about 300 days of sunshine a year. Good odds for having a nice wedding day! The only thing that is kind of a nuisance is the wind, which is frequent and often times quite turbulent.

Cody's economy is made up mostly from tourism dollars. Many of the people who visit Cody come because of it's proximity to Yellowstone, as well as the Western ambience and history that Cody offers. There are numerous hotels, dining spots, and unique shops that can be found in Cody. If you have people in your wedding party staying in the Cody area for several days, you can be sure that they will be able to find plenty to keep them occupied!

Getting into what will help you plan your wedding in Cody, there are quite a few options in terms of Lodging in Cody. For starters, there is the standard-fare type motels and motor-inns in Cody that are geared more toward the budget Traveler. There is the Best Western Sunset Motor Inn that is a bit older (built in 1948, but remodeled in 1996) but nonetheless offers a clean and comfortable place to stay. They can be contacted at 888-733-1093. There is also a Comfort Inn in town. This motel has 75 rooms and is located in the Buffalo Bill Village Resort. 888-733-1093. For something a little more quaint and intimate, you might want to try the Parson's Pillow B & B. This was originally a Methodist-Episcopal Church built in 1902, so there is some fun history here. There are 5 bedrooms with different themes. This Bed and Breakfast is located right in the heart of Cody, so you are always close to restaurants and shopping.

Speaking of restaurants, Cody has a lot to offer. From Chinese Fare at the Cody Hong Kong Restaurant to family fare at the Sunset House Restaurant (307) 587-2257, to the Olive Glenn Golf and Country Club which has a decent wine list, a full bar, and great food. A few of the offerings are Shrimp Cocktail and Onion Petals for the appetizers, and a few salads ranging from a basic house salad to a Chinese Chicken Salad, and of course, the main entrees which include Rib Eye Steaks, Pork Chops, Baby Back Ribs, a Pan-seared Idaho Red Trout Filet, or Chicken Yakisoba!

Our pick for a perfect Cody wedding spot is the Chamberlin Inn, Located at 1032 12th Street. Located just steps off of Cody's main street, the Chamberlin Inn hosts a small boutique hotel, as well as the Court House Residence, the Cottage, and the Garden Studio Apartments. All of this is situated within a beautiful brick and wrought iron enclosure. The Chamberlin Inn is a very special spot to have a fully catered garden wedding. There is a great deal of privacy at this hotel, which is perfect for the bride and groom. The garden setting is romantic and intimate, and the service is exceptional. The Inn offers a conference and meeting room. The phone number for the Chamberlin Inn is (307) 587-0202.

GETTING TO CODY: If you would like your wedding party to fly into Cody, they will most likely have to connect from a larger city or town and fly into the Yellowstone Regional Airport. The Airport is located just two minutes from downtown Cody, Wyoming, approximately 52 miles from the east gate of Yellowstone National Park.

Delta Air Lines services this airport from Denver and Salt Lake City. United Airlines also services several flights. The major highways leading into Cody are Highway 120 to the south, Highway 16 leading into Yellowstone to the west, and again, Highway 16 to the east towards Burlington. If you are coming in from Montana, you'll most likely come in on 14A or Highway 120.
